When Schabli was dead, a good man saw him in a dream and said to him: “O fortunate one! how has God dealt with thee?” — He replied: “Although there were grievous things in my account, since God saw that I was my own enemy, He took account of my dejection, my weakness, and my despair. He therefore had pity on me, and in His generosity entirely forgave me.”

According to Attar, the Persian Sufi poet, the great Sufi Shibli (Schabli), seen in a dream after his death, tells how, despite his faults, God looked upon his weakness and his dejection, had pity on him and, in His generosity, forgave him everything: God’s mercy is greater than our faults. This evening, if a fault weighs on you, entrust it to God’s mercy, forgive yourself, and forgive someone else too.
