Lesson 260

Extreme nearness acts as an obscuring veil.

Excerpt

Thou art my face; what wonder if I see it not? Extreme nearness acts as an obscuring veil. Thou art my reason; what wonder if I see Thee not Through the multitude of intervening obstacles? Thou art 'nearer to me than my neck vein,' How can I call to Thee, 'Ho,' as if Thou wert far off?

✨ To meditate on today

According to Rumi, the Persian Sufi poet, if we do not see God, it is not because He is far away but because He is too near, “nearer than the neck vein”, as the Quran says: neither do we see our own face. Today, instead of addressing God as if He were far away, speak to Him softly, as to someone very close, during an ordinary task: while walking, cooking or waiting.
