Lesson 183

Then she takes him in her arms, gives him her milk, and presses him to her breast.

Excerpt

A child fell into the water, and his mother fell into agitation and anguish. In his fright, the child flailed with arms and legs, but the water carried him to the mill-boat. The water drove him onward, and this beloved child went rolling over the surface of the water. His mother, who saw what had happened, would have wished to be in the boat; nevertheless, she throws herself into the water and saves the child; then she takes him in her arms, gives him her milk, and presses him to her breast.

✨ To meditate on today

According to Attar, at the beginning of “The Conference of the Birds,” a mother sees her child carried away by the current; she throws herself into the water, saves him and holds him close. Attar makes it an image of the tenderness that comes to rescue the distraught soul, like a mother. Today, when you feel carried away by your worries, stop struggling for a moment and breathe, entrusting yourself to that tenderness; then be that help yourself for someone who is drowning in their difficulties.
