Lesson 42

The true means of attaining the love of God is to consider the benefits we have received from Him.

Excerpt

Many dare not think of the particular graces God has bestowed upon them, for fear of taking vain glory therein; wherein indeed they are greatly mistaken; for since, as the Angelic Doctor teaches, the true means of attaining the love of God is to consider the benefits we have received from Him, the more we know these benefits, the more we shall love Him from Whom we have them; and since particular graces touch us more powerfully than common graces, so ought they to be considered more attentively.

✨ To meditate on today

According to Saint Francis de Sales, who here draws on Saint Thomas Aquinas (the “Angelic Doctor”), we should not forget God’s gifts out of false modesty: it is by considering the benefits we have received, especially those that are ours alone, that love grows. This evening, write down three specific blessings you received today, including one that concerns only you, and give thanks for each.
