Lesson 113

In return for His consolations, God expects from us tokens of affection and gratitude.

Excerpt

Why does God give us these sweetnesses? Is it not to stir up our love toward Him and make us gentler toward our neighbor? A mother gives sugar-plums to her child in order to obtain some caresses from him; likewise, in return for His consolations, God expects from us tokens of affection and gratitude. Now, we have no surer means of proving both to Him than to humble ourselves before Him, keep His commandments, and follow His desires.

โœจ To meditate on today

According to Saint Francis de Sales, God gives His sweetness as a mother gives treats to her child: to awaken our love for Him and make us gentler toward others. Today, turn a consolation you have received into gentleness for someone: a kind word, a service, a smile for a tired person.
