Lesson 260

Faith is the seed I sow.

Excerpt

Faith is the seed I sow: good works are the rain that fertilizes it; wisdom and modesty are the plough; my mind is the guiding-rein; I lay hold of the handle of the law; earnestness is the goad I use, and exertion is my draught-ox. This ploughing is ploughed to destroy the weeds of illusion. The harvest it yields is the immortal fruit of Nirvāna, and thus all sorrow ends.

✨ To meditate on today

According to the Gospel of Buddha, to a farming brahman who reproaches him for begging instead of ploughing, the Buddha answers that he too cultivates a field: faith is his seed, good works his rain, wisdom his plough, and the harvest is the peace of Nirvana, the end of suffering. Today, choose a “seed” to plant (an act of kindness, a patient effort) and water it with a concrete action before this evening.
