Is wanting to protect the weak a good thing according to A Course in Miracles?

Wanting to protect the weak can be seen as an expression of love; however, A Course in Miracles encourages a deeper understanding of the motivations and mindset behind such desires.

In ACIM, true defense comes from recognizing our shared identity as one with all creation, rather than perceiving ourselves as separate protectors of the weak. In Ch.19 — The Obstacles to Peace, it discusses how peace must encounter many obstacles, and that actions based on fear or separation often lead to further conflict and discontent. Rather than seeing others as weak or in need of saving, ACIM invites us to recognize the inherent strength and divinity in every individual.

Additionally, Ch.2 — The Function of the Miracle Worker emphasizes the importance of addressing fear and the belief in separation. When we approach others from a perspective of needing to protect them, we may inadvertently reinforce their feelings of helplessness. Instead, ACIM advocates for supporting others in recognizing their own strength and the truth of their being.

Protection rooted in love recognizes that all individuals are inherently powerful and capable. Rather than reinforcing hierarchies of weakness and strength, the Course teaches that we should uplift and empower one another through compassion and understanding, seeing each person as equally deserving of love and respect.
