Today let us review these ideas:
[65] My only function is the one God gave me.
I have no function but the one God gave me. This recognition releases me from all conflict, because it means I cannot have conflicting goals. With one purpose only, I am always certain what to do, what to say, and what to think. All doubt must disappear and I acknowledge that my only function is the one God gave me.
More specific applications of this idea might take these forms:
My perception of this does not change my function.
This does not give me a function other than the one God gave me.
Let me not use this to justify a function God did not give to me.
[66] My happiness and my function are one.
All things that come from God are one. They come from Oneness, and must be received as one. Fulfilling my function is my happiness because both come from the same Source. And I must learn to recognize what makes me happy if I would find happiness.
Some useful forms for specific applications of this idea are:
This cannot separate my happiness from my function.
The oneness of my happiness and my function remain wholly unaffected by this.
Nothing, including this, can justify the illusion of happiness apart from my function.
The third review of this block brings you back to two truths that are the heart of the Course: your function is unique (65), and this function is your happiness (66). Together, they dismantle one of the ego’s most persistent beliefs: that duty and pleasure are opposites. The Course teaches you they are one. Doing what you are here for, forgiving, being the light, is not a sacrifice; it is the happiest thing you can do.
“My only function is the one God gave me” (65) cuts through all conflicting goals. You do not have to choose between your career, family, spirituality, and social life, you have ONE purpose that encompasses all. And “My happiness and my function are one” (66) tells you why this is good news: it is not a chore, it is your joy. The ego wants you to believe that following God is sad; the Course tells you it is the only true joy.
This pair (65–66) is the culmination of Lessons 61–66. Review 83 allows you to see how the entire block 61–66 led to this unity: first who you are (61–62), then the impact of what you do (63–64), finally why it is good for you (65–66). The following reviews will continue through Lessons 67–80, showing how your understanding of identity deepens.
During your day, use these concrete forms: “My perception of this does not change my function. This does not give me a function other than the one God gave me.” And: “This cannot separate my happiness from my function. The unity of my happiness and my function remains whole.” Choose an activity you do today and ask yourself: am I doing this as a function separate from my happiness, or can I find joy in it?
Your function and your happiness are the same thing. Choosing one is choosing the other.
