Lesson 1
Lesson 1

Nothing I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place] means anything.

Now look slowly around you, and practice applying this idea very specifically to whatever you see:

This table does not mean anything.

This chair does not mean anything.

This hand does not mean anything.

This foot does not mean anything.

This pen does not mean anything.

Then look farther away from your immediate area, and apply the idea to a wider range:

That door does not mean anything.

That body does not mean anything.

That lamp does not mean anything.

That sign does not mean anything.

That shadow does not mean anything.

Notice that these statements are not arranged in any order, and make no allowance for differences in the kinds of things to which they are applied. That is the purpose of the exercise. The statement is merely applied to anything you see. As you practice applying the idea for the day, use it totally indiscriminately. Do not attempt to apply it to everything you see, for these exercises should not become ritualistic. Only be sure that nothing you see is specifically excluded.

One thing is like another as far as the application of the idea is concerned. Each of the first three lessons should not be done more than twice a day, preferably morning and evening. Nor should they be attempted for more than a minute or so, unless that entails a sense of hurry. A comfortable sense of leisure is essential.

✨ Summary & practice

See the world without the lens of the past.

This very first UCEM lesson is a SPRING CLEANING TEST of the mind. You arrive with years of habits and certainties, and now the course asks you to look at a table, a chair, your own hand, and say: This thing means nothing. It may feel strange, even unsettling. But understand the deeper meaning of this exercise: it is not about rendering the world empty or valueless. It is about recognizing that the meanings you project onto everything you see are not the truth of things.

The central idea is disarmingly simple: Nothing you see means anything. Not your favorite table, not a photo of someone you love, not a shadow on the wall. The course asks you to apply this idea without making any distinction between things. A door has exactly the same value as a body, a lamp as much as a tree. Why? Because you have given each thing a meaning based on your past, and those meanings are precisely what prevent you from seeing reality.

This lesson inaugurates the entire journey of the first fifty lessons. It lays the foundation upon which all the following lessons will build. Lesson 2 will teach you that you have given all things the meaning they have for you, and Lesson 3 that you understand nothing of what you see. Do you see the common thread? Everything begins here, with this radical act of suspending meaning. The subsequent lessons will build on this foundation to guide you gradually toward a purified perception.

To put this into practice today, slowly look around you. For each object you see, simply say: This thing means nothing. Do not choose, judge, or discriminate. Do this morning and evening, no more than a minute each time. And above all, do not rush. Allow yourself to be surprised by the freedom this simple phrase can bring you.

In addition, I invite you to watch these videos to fully grasp that this is not a theoretical course, but a practical one-aligned with what quantum physics also demonstrates:
