Tukaram, Poem 2599

Jupiter’s year in the Lion has come, bringing
wealth to barbers and priests. A man may
keep millions of sins within him, so long as he
shaves his head and chin. He gets rid of what he
shaves off, but what change has taken place in
him? What is there to prove that his sins have
gone? His evil habits have not altered. When
there is neither faith nor devotion, says Tuka, all
efforts are wasted.
