Tukaram, Poem 893

The servants of Vishnu are softer than butter,
yet we can cleave adamant; though dead
we are alive, sleeping we are awake; we will give
you whatever you ask for. We are generous enough
to give away the very cloth from our loins, yet we
will put a knave to confusion. We are more loving
than father or mother, yet no enemy can deal out
such destruction. What do we care for the sweet-
ness of nature? Even poison is weak against us;
what bitterness is there in it? Tuka says, We are
all sweetness; we satisfy the several desires of all
men.
