Tukaram, Poem 495

You must dig up desire by the roots, then only
can you be said to have renounced the world.
If you will not do so, you should live in the world
and enjoy it; you should not make yourself ridiculous.
You must strike down desire and triumph over it,
then you may escape from all the world.
Tuka says, If you are eager for union with God, you
must first annihilate the germs of desire.
