Tukaram, Poem 135

A jewel fades under the shadow of poverty; adversity eclipses the best of things. Beauty and prosperity are not found apart from Panduranga, generous master, sea of mercy. If you set materials for a feast before one who knows not how to cook, these conveniences are all wasted on him. Tuka says, If you put a jewel on a goat’s neck, it looks a mean thing for that very reason.
