1. A psalm for Asaph. O God, the heathens are come into Thy inheritance, they have defiled thy holy temple: they have made Jerusalem as a place to keep fruit.
2. They have given the dead bodies of Thy servants to be meat for the fowls of the air: the flesh of thy saints for the beasts of the earth.
3. They have poured out their blood as water, round about Jerusalem and there was none to bury them.
4. We are become a reproach to our neighbours: a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.
5. How long, O Lord, wilt Thou be angry for ever: shall Thy zeal be kindled like a fire?
6. Pour out Thy wrath upon the nations that have not known Thee: and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon Thy name.
7. Because they have devoured Jacob; and have laid waste his place.
8. Remember not our former iniquities: let Thy mercies speedily prevent us, for we are become exceeding poor.

9. Help us, O God, our saviour: and for the glory of Thy name, O Lord, deliver us: and forgive us our sins for thy name’s sake:
10. Lest they should say among the Gentiles: Where is their God? And let him be made known among the nations before our eyes, By the revenging the blood of Thy servants, which hath been shed:
11. Let the sighing of the prisoners come in before Thee. According to the greatness of thy arm, take possession of the children of them that have been put to death.
12. And render to our neighbours sevenfold in their bosom: the reproach wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.
13. But we Thy people, and the sheep of thy pasture, will give thanks to Thee for ever. We will shew forth Thy praise, unto generation and generation.

19. They spoke against God and said:
“Can God set a table in the desert?
20. Behold, He struck the rock, and waters flowed,
and torrents poured forth;
can He also give us bread
or provide meat for His people?”
21. Yahweh heard and was angered,
a fire was kindled against Jacob,
and wrath arose against Israel,
22. because they had not believed in God
and had not hoped in His help.
23. Yet He commanded the clouds above,
and opened the gates of heaven;
24. He rained manna upon them for food,
and gave them the wheat of heaven.
25. Each ate the bread of the mighty;
He sent them food to the full.
26. He made the east wind blow in the heavens,
by His power He brought the south wind;
27. He rained meat upon them like dust,
and winged birds like the sand of the seas.

26. He made the east wind blow in the heavens,
by His power He brought the south wind;
27. He rained meat upon them like dust,
and winged birds like the sand of the seas.
28. He made them fall in the midst of their camp,
round about their tents.
29. They ate and were filled to excess;
God gave them what they had desired.
30. They had not yet satisfied their lust,
and their food was still in their mouths,
31. when the wrath of God rose against them;
He slew the best-fed among them,
He struck down the young men of Israel.
32. After all this, they still sinned,
and had no faith in His wonders.
33. Then He scattered their days like a breath,
and their years with sudden destruction.
34. When He slew them, they sought Him,
they returned, eager to find God again,
35. they remembered that God was their rock,
and the Most High God their deliverer.
36. But they deceived Him with their words,
and their tongue lied to Him;
37. their heart was not steadfast with Him,
they were not faithful to His covenant.
38. But He is merciful:
He forgives sin and does not destroy;
often He restrained His anger,
and did not give Himself over to all His fury.
round about their tents.

38. But He is merciful:
He forgives sin and does not destroy;
often He restrained His anger,
and did not give Himself over to all His fury.
39. He remembered that they were but flesh,
a breath that passeth away and returneth no more.
40. How often they rebelled against Him in the desert,
they provoked Him in the wilderness!
41. They ceased not to tempt God
and to provoke the Holy One of Israel.
42. They remembered no more His power,
the day when He delivered them from the oppressor,
43. when He wrought His signs in Egypt,
His wondrous deeds in the fields of Tanis.
44. He changed their rivers into blood,
and they could not drink of their streams.
45. He sent against them the fly that devoured them,
and the frog that brought them to ruin.
46. He gave their crops to the locust,
the fruit of their labour to its swarms.
47. He destroyed their vines with hail,
and their sycamores with hailstones.
48. He gave their cattle over to the hail,
and their flocks to the thunderbolts.
49. He unleashed against them the fire of His wrath,
fury, rage, and distress,
a whole host of angels of doom.
a breath that passeth away and returneth no more.
40. How often they rebelled against Him in the desert,
they provoked Him in the wilderness!
41. They ceased not to tempt God

48. He gave their cattle over to the hail,
and their flocks to the thunderbolts.
49. He unleashed against them the fire of His wrath,
fury, rage, and distress,
a whole host of angels of doom.
50. He gave free course to His anger,
He spared not their souls from death,
He delivered their lives to destruction.
51. He smote all the first-born in Egypt,
the first-fruits of strength in the tents of Ham.
52. He led forth His people like sheep,
He guided them like a flock in the wilderness.
53. He led them in safety, and they feared nothing,
and the sea swallowed up their enemies.
54. He brought them to the border of His sanctuary,
to the mountain which His right hand had conquered.
55. He drove out the nations before them,
allotted them their inheritance by lot,
and made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.
56. Yet they still tempted and provoked the Most High God,
and kept not His ordinances.
57. They turned aside and were faithless like their fathers,
they turned aside like a deceitful bow.
58. They provoked Him with their high places,
and stirred His jealousy with their graven images.
He spared not their souls from death,
He delivered their lives to destruction.
51. He smote all the first-born in Egypt,
the first-fruits of strength in the tents of Ham.
52. He led forth His people like sheep,

57. They turned aside and were faithless like their fathers,
they turned aside like a deceitful bow.
58. They provoked Him with their high places,
and stirred His jealousy with their graven images.
59. God heard and was indignant,
He took a great aversion to Israel.
60. He disdained the dwelling of Silo,
the tent where He dwelt among men.
61. He delivered His strength into captivity,
and His majesty into the hands of the enemy.
62. He abandoned His people to the sword,
and was indignant against His inheritance.
63. Fire devoured His young men,
and His maidens heard no nuptial song.
64. His priests fell by the sword,
and His widows made no lamentation.
65. The Lord awoke, as a man from sleep,
like a warrior overcome by wine.
66. He smote His enemies from behind,
He inflicted upon them everlasting shame.
67. But He took an aversion to the tent of Joseph,
and rejected the tribe of Ephraim.
68. He chose the tribe of Juda,
the mountain of Sion which He loved.
69. And He built His sanctuary like the heights of heaven,
like the earth which He founded for ever.
70. He chose David, His servant,
and took him from the sheepfolds;
He took a great aversion to Israel.
60. He disdained the dwelling of Silo,
the tent where He dwelt among men.
61. He delivered His strength into captivity,
and His majesty into the hands of the enemy.
62. He abandoned His people to the sword,

like the earth which He founded for ever.
70. He chose David, His servant,
and took him from the sheepfolds;
71. He took him from following the ewes,
to shepherd Jacob, His people,
and Israel, His inheritance.
72. And David guided them with uprightness of heart,
and led them with a skilful hand.
to shepherd Jacob, His people,
and Israel, His inheritance.
72. And David guided them with uprightness of heart,
and led them with a skilful hand.
