Psalms, chapter 69

1. Unto the end, a psalm for David, to bring to remembrance that the Lord saved him.
2. O God, come to my assistance; O Lord, make haste to help me.
3. Let them be confounded and ashamed that seek my soul:
4. Let them be turned backward, and blush for shame that desire evils to me: Let them be presently turned away blushing for shame that say to me: Tis well, tis well.
5. Let all that seek Thee rejoice and be glad in Thee; and let such as love Thy salvation say always: The Lord be magnified.
6. But I am needy and poor; O God, help me. Thou art my helper and my deliverer: O Lord, make no delay.
8. For it is for Thy sake that I bear reproach,
that shame covers my face.
9. I have become a stranger to my brothers,
an unknown man to the sons of my mother.
10. For the zeal of Thy house consumes me,
and the reproaches of those who insult Thee fall upon me.
11. I weep and fast:
they make it a reproach against me.
12. I put on sackcloth for clothing,
and I am the object of their mockery.
13. Those who sit at the gate speak of me,
and the drinkers of strong liquor make songs about me.
14. But I address my prayer to Thee, Yahweh;
in the favorable time, O God, according to Thy great goodness,
answer me, according to the truth of Thy salvation.
15. Draw me out of the mire, and let me not remain sunk in it;
let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters!
16. Let not the floods overwhelm me any more,
let not the abyss swallow me up,
let not the pit close over me!
17. Hear me, Yahweh, for Thy loving-kindness is compassionate;
in Thy great mercy turn to me,
18. And hide not Thy face from Thy servant;
I am in distress, make haste to hear me.
19. Draw near to my soul, deliver it;
save me because of my enemies.
20. Thou knowest my reproach,
my shame, my disgrace;
all my persecutors are before Thee.
21. Reproach hath broken my heart, and I am sick;
I looked for pity, but in vain;
for comforters, and found none.
22. For food they give me bitter herbs;
in my thirst they give me vinegar to drink.
23. Let their table become a snare to them,
a trap in the midst of their security!
24. Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not;
make their loins tremble for ever.
25. Pour out Thy wrath upon them,
and let the fire of Thy anger overtake them!
26. Let their dwelling be laid waste,
let there be no more inhabitants in their tents!
27. For they persecute him whom Thou hast smitten,
they recount the sufferings of him whom Thou hast wounded.
28. Add iniquity to their iniquity,
and let them have no part in Thy righteousness.
29. Let them be blotted out of the book of life
and not be inscribed with the righteous.
30. But I am wretched and suffering;
may Thy help, O God, raise me up!
31. I will celebrate the name of God with songs,
I will exalt Him with thanksgiving;
32. And Yahweh will find them more pleasing than a bull,
than a young bull with horns and hoofs.
33. The afflicted shall rejoice when they see Him,
and you who seek God, your heart shall revive.
34. For Yahweh hears the poor,
and He does not despise His captives.
35. Let the heavens and the earth praise Him,
the seas and all that moves therein!
36. For God will save Sion and build the cities of Juda,
men shall dwell therein and possess them;
37. The race of His servants shall inherit it,
and those who love His name shall dwell therein.
