The Gospel of Thomas (Pursah’s version)

1. And He said: “Whoever discovers the interpretation of these sayings shall not taste death.”
2. I said: “Those who seek must not cease seeking until they find. When they have found, they will be troubled. When they are troubled, they will marvel, and they will reign over all.”
3. J. said: “If your teachers say to you, ‘Look, the way to God is in heaven,’ then the birds will precede you. If they say to you, ‘It is in the sea,’ the fish will precede you. On the contrary, the way to God is within you, and you are everywhere. When thou knowest thyself, thou shalt be known, and thou shalt understand that we are one. But if thou knowest not thyself, thou livest in poverty, and thou art poverty.”
4. I said: “An old person must not hesitate to ask a little child the meaning of life, and that person shall live. For many of the first shall be last, and they shall become one.”
5. Know what is before thee, and what is hidden from thee shall be revealed. For there is nothing hidden that shall not be revealed.
6. The disciples asked Him: “Wouldst Thou have us fast? How ought we to pray? Should we give to charity? What diet ought we to observe?” I answered: “When you go into a region and walk about the countryside, and the people welcome you, eat what they serve you. After all, what enters your mouth will not defile you; rather, it is what comes out of your mouth that will reveal you.”
8. J. said: “A wise fisherman cast his net into the sea. When he drew it up, it was full of little fish. Among them, he discovered a great and beautiful fish. He cast all the little fish back into the sea and chose the great fish. Whoever here has two good ears should listen.”
9. J. said: “Behold, the sower went out, took a handful of seeds, and scattered them. Some fell on the road, and the birds came and ate them. Others fell upon the rocks; they took no root and yielded no grain. Others fell among the thorns; they choked the seed, and the worms ate them. And others fell on good soil, and it yielded a good harvest; it gave sixty measures and a hundred and twenty measures.”
11. The dead are not alive, and the living will not die.
13. I said to the disciples, “Compare Me to something and tell Me what I am like.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Thou art like a righteous angel.” Matthew said to Him, “Thou art like a wise teacher.” Thomas said to Him, “Master, my mouth is unable to say what Thou art.” Then He took him aside and withdrew, and told him three things. When Thomas returned to his friends, they asked him, “What did J tell thee?” Thomas said to them, “If I tell you one of the things He told me, you will take up stones and stone Me, and fire will come out of the stones and consume You.”
17. I said: “I will give you what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, what no hand has touched, what has not been touched, and what has not arisen in the heart of man.”
18. The disciples said to J: “Tell us what our end shall be.” He answered: “Have ye then discovered the beginning, that ye seek the end? For where the beginning is, there is the end. Blessed is he who stands at the beginning: he shall know the end and shall not taste death.”
20. The disciples said to J: “Tell us what the divine Rule of God is like.” He said to them: “It is like a mustard seed. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it falls upon prepared soil, it produces a great plant and becomes a shelter for the birds of the sky.”
22. When you make the two into one, and when you make the inside like the outside, the outside like the inside, and the above like the below, and when you make the male and female into a single being, then the male will not be male and the female female. Then you will enter the Kingdom.
23. I shall choose you, one out of a thousand and two out of ten thousand, and they shall stand as one. And they shall be one.
24. The disciples said, “Show us the place where Thou art, for we must seek it.” He said to them, “Let him who has two ears here listen! There is a light within you, and it shines upon the whole world. If it does not shine, the world is dark.”
26. Thou seest the speck that is in Thy brother’s eye, but Thou seest not the beam that is in Thine own eye. When Thou hast removed the beam from Thine eye, then shalt Thou see clearly enough to remove the splinter from thy brother’s eye.
28. I stood in the world and found them all drunk, but I found none who was thirsty. They came into the world empty, and they seek to leave the world empty. But in the meantime, they are drunk. When they have shaken off their wine, they will open their eyes.
31. A prophet is not accepted in his own town. A physician does not heal those who know him.
32. J. said: “A city built upon a high hill and fortified cannot fall, nor be hidden.”
34. J. said: “If a blind man guides another blind man, they will both fall into a pit.”
36. Do not worry, from morning until evening and from evening until morning, about what thou shalt wear. The lilies neither toil nor spin.
37. When you take off your garments without shame, and place them beneath your feet like little children and tread upon them, then shall you see the Son of the Living One, and you shall not be afraid.
40. A vine was planted outside the Father, but because it is not strong, it shall be uprooted by its roots and shall pass away.
41. I said, “Whoever has something in hand will receive more, and those who have nothing will be deprived of the little they have.”
45. Grapes are not gathered from thorns, nor figs from thistles.
47. A person cannot mount two horses or draw two bows. And a servant cannot serve two masters, for he would honor one and offend the other. No one drinks old wine and wishes at once to drink young wine. One does not pour young wine into old wineskins, for they might burst, and one does not pour old wine into new wineskins, for it might spoil. One does not sew an old patch onto a new garment, for it would create a tear.
48. J. said, “If two people are reconciled in the same house, they will say to the mountain, ‘Move here!’ and it will move.”
49. Blessed are those who are alone and chosen, for You shall find the Kingdom. For You have come from it, and You shall return there again.
51. The disciples said to Him, “When will the rest of the dead take place, and when will the new world come?” He said to them, “What you await has come, but you do not know it.”
52. The disciples said to Him, “Twenty-four prophets have spoken in Israel, and they have all spoken of Thee.” He said to them, “You have disregarded the One who is living and is in your presence, and you have spoken of the dead.”
54. Blessed are the poor, for the Kingdom of the Father is Yours.
56. He who has understood this world has found only a corpse, and he who has discovered the corpse, of him the world is no longer worthy.
57. The divine rule of God is like a person who had good seed. His rival came during the night and sowed weeds among the good seed. He did not let the workers pull up the weeds, but said to them: “No, otherwise you might go and pull up the weeds and pull up the wheat at the same time.” For on the day of the harvest, the weeds will be visible, they will be pulled up and burned.”
58. J. said, “Congratulations to the person who has forgiven and found life.”
59. Look toward the Living One while you live. Otherwise, when you die and then try to see the Living One, you will not be able to see Him.
61. I am He who has come forth from that which is whole. What comes from my Father has been given to me. Therefore I say that if anyone is whole, he shall be filled with light, but if anyone is divided, he shall be filled with darkness.
62. I said, “I reveal my mysteries to those who are ready for my Mysteries. Let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”
63. There was a rich man who had much money. He said, “I will invest my money to sow, reap, plant, and fill my storehouses with goods, so that I may lack nothing.” This is what he thought in his heart, but that night he died.
66. J. said, “Show me the stone which the builders rejected. It is the cornerstone.”
67. J. said: “Those who know everything, but are lacking in themselves, are utterly lacking”.
70. Jesus said, “If you bring forth what is within you, what you have will save you. If you do not have that within you, what you do not have within you will kill you.”
72. A person said to Him, “Tell my brothers to divide my father’s possessions with me.” He replied to that person, “Brother, who made Me a divider?” He turned to His disciples and said to them, “I am not a divider, am I?”
75. Jesus said, “Many stand at the door, but those who are alone will enter the bridal chamber.”
76. J. said: “The Divine Rule of God is like a merchant who had a store of merchandise, then found a pearl. This merchant was prudent; he sold the merchandise and bought the one pearl for himself. So it is with you: seek the treasure that does not fail, that endures, where no moth comes to eat and no worm destroys.”
79. A woman in the crowd said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore Thee and the breasts that nourished Thee.” He said to her, “Blessed are those who have heard the word of the Father and truly kept it! For there will be days when you will say, ‘Blessed is the womb that did not conceive and the breasts that gave no milk.’”
80. J. said: “He who has known the world has discovered a corpse, and he who has discovered a corpse, the world is not worthy of him.”
85. J. said: “Adam came forth from a great power and a great wealth, but he was not worthy of You. For if he had been worthy, he would not have tasted death.”
86. J. said: “Foxes have their dens and birds have their nests, but human beings have no place to lie down and rest.”
87. J. said, “Wretched is the body that depends on a body, and how wretched is the soul that depends on these two.”
88. J. said: “The messengers and the prophets will come to you and give you what belongs to you. You in turn will give them what you have, and you will say to yourselves, “When will they come to take what belongs to them?””
89. J. said, “Why do you wash the outside of the cup? Do you not understand that the One who made the inside is also the One who made the outside?”
90. J. said, “Come unto Me, for My yoke is easy and My lordship is gentle, and you shall find rest for yourselves.”
91. They said to Him, “Tell us who Thou art, that we may believe in Thee.” He said to them, “You examine the face of Heaven and earth, but you have not known the One who is in your presence, and you do not know how to examine the present moment.”
92. I said, “Seek and ye shall find.” However, in the past, I did not tell Thee the things about which Thou questionedst Me. Now I am ready to tell them, but Ye do not seek them.
94. J. said, “He who seeks shall find. And to him who knocks, it shall be opened.”
95. J. said: “If you have money, do not lend it at interest. Rather, give it to someone who will not repay you.”
96. Jesus said: “The divine rule of God is like a woman. She took a little leaven, hid it in the dough, and transformed it into a great quantity of dough and made large loaves of bread from it. Whoever here has two ears had better listen!”
97. J. said: “The Divine Rule of God is like a woman who carried a jar full of flour. As she walked along a distant road, the handle of the jar broke, and the meal spilled behind her along the road. She did not know it; she had noticed no trouble. When she arrived home, she set down the jar and discovered that it was empty.”.
99. The disciples said to Him, “Thy brothers and Thy mother are outside.” He said to them, “Those who do what My Father wills are My brothers and My mother. They are the ones who will enter the Kingdom of the Father.”
100. They showed Jesus a gold coin and said to Him: “The people of the Roman emperor demand taxes from us.” He said to them: “Give to the emperor what belongs to the emperor. Give to God what belongs to God.”
103. J. said, “Blessed are those who know where the rebels are going to attack. They can set out, gather their Divine resources, and be ready before the rebels arrive.”
106. J. said, “When you make the two one, you will become children of Adam, and when you say, ‘Mountain, move from here!’ it will move.”
108. J. said, “Whoever drinks from my mouth will become like me. I myself will become that person, and the hidden things will be revealed to him.”
110. J. said, “Let him who has found the world, and become rich, renounce the world.”
111. J. said: “The heavens and the earth will roll up in Thy presence, and he who lives with the Living will not see death. Have I not said: ‘Those who have found themselves, the world is not worthy of them’?”
113. The disciples said to Him, “When will the Kingdom come?” He answered, “It will not come by watching for it. It will not be said, ‘Here it is’ or ‘There it is.’ Rather, the Kingdom of the Father is spread upon the earth, and people do not see it.” * * *
