Introduction to the Devout Life, Chapter xvi (117)

Of the sentiments that must be kept after this exercise.
On the day when you have made this renewal, and on the following days, you must very often repeat from your heart and with your lips these fervent words of Saint Paul, Saint Augustine, Saint Catherine of Genoa, and others: No, I am no longer my own; whether I live or die, I am my Saviour’s. I have nothing of myself or of my own: my self is Jesus, my own is to be His. O world! you are still yourself, and I have always been myself; but henceforth I shall no longer be myself. No, we shall no longer be ourselves, for our hearts shall have changed; and the world, which has so often deceived us, shall be deceived in us; for, perceiving our change only little by little, it will always believe us to be Esaus, while we shall find ourselves to be Jacobs.
All these exercises must remain deeply in our hearts, and, leaving our meditations and prayers, we must pass gently to our affairs, for fear that the liquor of our resolutions should be spilled and lost; for it must soak and penetrate every part of our soul: yet all this without effort of mind or body.
