John, chapter 22

1. After this, Jesus showed Himself again to His disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and He showed Himself thus:
2. Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael, who was of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other of His disciples were together.
3. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with thee also.” They went out, therefore, and got into the boat; but they caught nothing that night.
4. When morning came, Jesus stood on the shore; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
5. And Jesus said to them, “Children, have ye nothing to eat?” “No,” they answered.
6. He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and ye shall find.” They cast it; and they could no longer draw it in because of the great number of fish.
7. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Simon Peter, hearing that it was the Lord, put on his garment and his girdle, for he was naked, and cast himself into the sea.
8. The other disciples came in the boat (for they were not far from land, only about two hundred cubits away), dragging the net full of fish.
9. When they had come down to land, they saw there a charcoal fire, with fish laid upon it, and bread.
10. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.”
11. Simon Peter went aboard the boat and drew the net ashore, full of a hundred and fifty-three large fish; and though there were so many, the net was not torn.
12. Jesus said to them, “Come and eat.” And none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who art Thou?” because they knew that it was the Lord.
13. Jesus came and took the bread, and gave it to them; He did the same with the fish.
14. This was already the third time that Jesus appeared to His disciples, since He had risen from the dead.
15. When they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter: “Simon, son of John, lovest Thou Me more than these?” He answered Him: “Yes, Lord, Thou knowest that I love Thee.” Jesus said to him: “Feed My lambs.”
16. He said to him a second time: “Simon, son of John, lovest Thou Me?” Peter answered Him: “Yes, Lord, Thou knowest well that I love Thee.” Jesus said to him: “Feed My lambs.”
17. He said to him the third time: “Simon, son of John, lovest Thou Me?” Peter was grieved because Jesus asked him the third time: “Lovest Thou Me?” and he answered Him: “Lord, Thou knowest all things; Thou knowest well that I love Thee.” Jesus said to him: “Feed My sheep.
18. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, when thou wast younger, thou didst gird thyself, and didst go whither thou wouldest; but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and lead thee whither thou wouldest not.”
19. — He said this, signifying by what death Peter should glorify God. — And after having thus spoken, He added: “Follow Me.”
20. Peter, turning about, saw following him the disciple whom Jesus loved, the one who, during supper, had leaned upon His breast, and had said unto Him: “Lord, who is it that betrayeth Thee?”
21. Peter therefore, seeing him, said to Jesus: “Lord, and what shall become of this man?”
22. Jesus said unto him: “If I will that he remain until I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou Me.”
23. The report therefore went abroad among the brethren that this disciple should not die. Yet Jesus had not said unto him that he should not die; but: “If I will that he remain until I come, what is that to thee?”
24. It is this same disciple who bears witness to these things and who has written them; and we know that his testimony is true.
25. Jesus did many other things also; if they were recounted in detail, I think the whole world could not contain the books that would have to be written.
